This collection consists of records of businesses in which Charles W. Wetmore played a significant role either as an officer or financial backer. They relate principally to western iron mines and facilities for rail and water transportation of the ore. Particularly important are the papers of the Oregon and Transcontinental Company, one of the original holding companies in the United States, and the North American Company, which was its successor. The North American Company's earliest investments were in railroads, but it soon began acquiring control of electric light and power properties around Milwaukee and Wisconsin. The papers include corporation stockholders' and directors' minutes, incorporation agreements, earnings and expense statements, correspondence, indentures, briefs in legal cases, and other materials relating to investments.
